Every built edge, shaft of light, and surface finish becomes a subtle imprint of remembrance, grounding a global family in their ancestral roots and shared spatial memory.

In one of Chennai’s fastest-developing urban areas, D.L.E.A’s Perforated Plane House is shaped as a pierced plane of open space. This east-facing plot was one of the few remaining vacant lands in the built-up area, its distinctive position informing the Indian practice’s ethos to blend the home into the surrounding environment while offering a serene ambiance within. A small clinic with separate entrances sits on the site, divided by a courtyard which acts as a buffer and enhances the vistas from the living room.

The design of Coexistence House is rooted in the philosophy of living in harmony with nature. The site, located in Perungudi—a rapidly urbanising neighbourhood of Chennai—held a unique character with its mature mango and coconut trees, remnants of an older garden deeply tied to the memory of the place. The client’s deep emotional connection to these trees became the guiding principle for the design to build without displacing nature, allowing the house and landscape to grow together as one ecosystem.

Tucked into the dense grain of Chennai’s Pallavaram neighborhood in India, Suvadu – Annai Sita Illam by D.L.E.A. is an architectural homage to memory, matriarchy, and migratory roots. Designed for a 70-year-old woman and her dispersed family now living abroad, the 245-square-meter residence stands on a narrow plot that was once part of a larger ancestral compound filled with mango trees and a hand-dug well.
