PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The brief states that, to begin with, any Naturally occurring process could be Studied and its model can be interpreted as an intervention to a naturally threatened urban situation. The site for this experimentation is the Pallikaranai marshland area. The design process looks at how ripples, as a naturally occurring phenomenon, could be instigative of intervening in the ecologically threatened marshland. The Palikaranai marsh which was originally 5500Ha big has been shrinking gradually and has recently become 550Ha. As a reaction, placing the ripple pattern along the boundary of the present marshland, it is envisaged as a buffer space to curb further shrinkage of the boundary. In other words, this is a boundary treatment with ripples.
The next aspect is to see what all possibilities can be done if the ripples are transformed into built spaces, the relation between the built space and water body. Under the built form, the marshland still continues, either as a waterfront in low tide while it gushes out due to flooding during high tide. This space is treated in such a way as to promote the existence and sustenance of flora and fauna. The skylights in the ripples in circular fashion, serve to act as respiratory organs of the marshland below.
